At Shalloway & Shalloway, P.A., our team is made up of individuals who go above and beyond, not only in their work but also in their communities. One such team member is Robert Meeks, our Case Processor, who has been making a difference in Palm Beach County for over a decade through his volunteer work with the United Way’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. We sat down with Robert to learn more about his journey, motivation, and the impact he’s had.
Q: What type of volunteer work do you do, and how did you get involved?
Robert: I volunteer with the United Way of Palm Beach County’s VITA Program, which provides free tax preparation to households earning less than $75,000 annually. I currently serve as a Site Coordinator, supervising one of the 12 sites throughout the county—usually in Delray or East Boca. I review all tax returns for accuracy and oversee 4–5 volunteers each night. I started in high school as a greeter, then became a tax preparer, and worked my way up from there.
Q: How long have you been volunteering?
Robert: It’s been over 10 years now. What started as a way to earn volunteer hours in high school turned into a true passion.
Q: What inspired you to start volunteering?
Robert: When my mother was pregnant with my brother, her home was burned down and her partner was tragically killed. She had nothing. But her community stepped in… putting her up in a hotel, helping her get back on her feet. She’s volunteered with VITA for over 15 years now, and I started because I wanted to pay forward the kindness that helped our family in such a critical time.
Q: What organization do you volunteer with?
Robert: I volunteer solely with the United Way of Palm Beach County through the VITA program.
Q: How do you balance your work at Shalloway & Shalloway with volunteering?
Robert: Mr. Shalloway has been incredibly supportive. On the days I need to volunteer, he allows me to work through lunch so I can leave early. Even during my probationary period, he trusted me to make up the time. That kind of support has made it possible for me to continue
giving back.
Q: What has been your most meaningful experience through volunteering?
Robert: Honestly, it’s the gratitude from the people we help. Many come back year after year, and they are so thankful. That appreciation stays with you.
Q: Have there been any unexpected lessons or takeaways from your time volunteering?
Robert: Volunteering has really helped me develop strong time management skills. I’ve learned how to stay organized and punctual, which are skills that carry over into every aspect of life.
Q: How has Shalloway & Shalloway supported your volunteer work?
Robert: The firm has supported me from day one. Mr. Shalloway didn’t just allow me to volunteer, but he encouraged it. He values community involvement and has always made it easier for me to fulfill both my work and volunteer commitments.
Q: What advice would you give to someone considering volunteer work?
Robert: It’s not for the faint of heart. You have to give it 100%, just like any job. But if you do, the rewards are absolutely worth it.
Q: What are some ways people can support the VITA program?
Robert: You can donate directly to the United Way and earmark your gift for the VITA program. And of course, we’re always looking for volunteers. If you’re interested, reach out to United Way of Palm Beach County around November—that’s when they begin recruiting for tax season.
